2025 Competition License School info & FAQ
Q: So I am signed up for comp school, what should I expect ? I see it's a 3 day program and I need to be there on Friday night around 6PM, at Summit Point Main track.
A: Well, at 6:30 you better be in the main classroom in your seat ready to go. This is Racing 101 just like getting to grid. BE EARLY ..... This classroom fills up fast and you will be in there a few hours; get a good seat. Standing in the back, taking your written test on the wall is not recommended. You need to pay attention and prepare to take your written exam. The SCCA will have instructors , stewards , assistants, etc. They will show you a bunch of slides and discuss a bunch of subjects, so pay attention.
Yes it says the paddock will open @ 6:00 pm for drivers school. Class is at 7:00. BE IN YOUR SEAT AT 6:30 AS IT WILL BE PACKED.
Be sure to read the Supps. You will hear this constantly. These are the supplemental rules and notes about an event. THIS ISVERY IMPORTANT.
TIP: Bring your copy of the GCR you bought on AMAZON With you.
Now lets talk about Saturday Morning. We highly suggest you get a good night of sleep.
Again get to the track early. You will be instructed where to go and who to see. You will then meet your group Lead Instructor which will then introduce you to your weekend instructor. Don't play with your car, As you should have a crew helping you. If you do not have a crew, please tell your lead instructor, preferably before the event.
Dress WARM even with a race suit on and fire undies, it gets cold. Have a Thermos with something hot, gloves, hand warmers etc.. Like a race weekend, be prepared for everything.
Have all of your safety gear ready to go; Helmet , Suit , Gloves , Shoes , Socks , Baclava , Fire Undies, EAR PLUGS. I'll say it again , EAR PLUGS. Make a checklist and go over it because if you forget something, tech does not care, If you don't have your stuff do not pass go do not collect $200.00 The Tech shed will want to see everything.
If you have rented a car for school the prep shop your working with will give you instructions before. Verify that your car is reserved; any payments and deposits completed and you are ready to go. If you have not rented a car and are supporting yourself with your or a friends build, you will be required to have the vehicle Tech Inspected top to bottom and you will need the vehicles Log Book. If you don't have a log book, Tech can issue you one and that takes even more time. You can find this information in the GCR for your car class.
You will not have time in the morning to do much.. Just about all the instructors are volunteers. Don't waste their time !!! Be ready to go.
Most of the day is basically like this. In Class In Car, In Class In Car, In Class In Car. Lunch / Bathroom Repeat.
Take Notes and ask questions ; you are be evaluated on many things. Mostly DO I FEEL SAFE BEING ON A TRACK WITH YOU AT HIGH SPEEDS ? CAN I TRUST YOU TO PUT SAFETY FIRST ? This is club racing. On your best day you're getting a plastic trophy and the right to talk major smack to your racing buddies.. Fun and Safety go hand in hand.
Saturday night again get the best sleep you can; because you're racing on Sunday. Yes! Racing! That's why it's called competition drivers school.
Sunday Funday
All that work is finally going to be put to use. It will be a much better day. You feel better, have made some new friends, are more acclimated with your car and feel good about it all. Again it's a busy day, be prepared for everything. If you have never lined up behind a pace car, it can be a little nerve wracking the first time. Your brain is like .... What the heck is going to happen when we all get to turn 1 ? Do exactly what your instructor told you and you will be fine.
Remember just because you finished your in car and classroom stuff, doesn't mean you're done. You still have to be interviewed by your coaching staff and someone with the authority to do so, needs to sign off on your novice permit. After your instructor and the head instructor give you the thumbs up, be prepared for some advice. Take it in stride as it's for the best.
Welcome to Racing congratulations HAVE FUN
